Sara, it's quite easy actually. Trans fats turn up in highly processed food. So think of food that has a long shelf life. Some examples are cookies, crackers, frozen dinners, breaded meats (think chicken nuggets), etc. All you need to do is look at the ingredients in the nutrition label. If anywhere you find "partially hydrogenated oil" it has trans fats.

My recommendation is to always try to eat more whole foods than highly processed foods. That means foods in their closest natural state. Fruits, veggies, lean meats, eggs, etc.

I hope this helps.

Dennis,
Now that we are aware of the history of trans fats, and what to look for and what not to eat. I think it would be helpful to have a more concrete list of what not to eat and how to subsistute those items out of our diets, but maintain the same level of satification and convience.

You see! A lot of people don't know about this. Now I have educated at least one person about reading nutrition labels!

Thanks, Jenny!

Dennis, you ROCK! I can't remember what I put on your survey because I like the variety in your blogs, but I find this very interesting and worthwhile. It was quite the surprise to read the labels on my Weight Watchers meals and see the "partially hydrogenated oils" included.

I think it was you who said "If it won't go bad, don't eat it"? I like that idea and will stick to my avocado and cucumber sandwiches!!

No matter how busy I am at work, I am compelled to stop and read your blogs.....and I'm always glad I did!!

Lydia, cardio is just one component of losing weight. Cardio, resistance training and a healthy diet are the trifecta in losieng weight.
